The Drill

Introduction
_____________________

Ever since I wrote the babysitter two, I never had any idea what the next story would be about. I thought I would go through writer’s block (which I never did), but at my new school I moved into last Wednesday on the eleventh of January, they had the same drill. Same exact twenty minutes. What got me into the idea was when the substitute was helping me out on algebra (at the other school, I was still reviewing long division), I scared her. During the drill, I pointed at the window and said, “He’s staring at us through the window (Not so loud)!” The teacher looked at the window ‘in fright’ and I could tell she was scared for a moment there. She snapped out of it. But that’s what got me the idea. A drill… and it turns to real life… That’s what inspired me to write this story. I hope you enjoy it.

The Story

The loudspeaker in the classroom boomed which caused the students to jump after an eerie silence. “Sorry about the interruption,” it said. It was the principle. “But we will be having a drill tomorrow at 2:00.” The speaker turned off.

The class silently started talking about it. Most of the students didn’t like emergency drills. When it’s a fire drill, the alarm goes off. The alarm is known for its loudness. It sounds like a piercing scream.

Mrs. Johnson looked at the class. “Silence, students,” she said. But the class continued to talk.

The one who hated it most was Tyler. Tyler always hated drills. He hates the alarm, especially. And due to the fact he’s sitting right under the alarm, he gets worried.

Tyler lowered his head back to his book. He felt a nudge on his shoulder. He looked back to see that Chris was right behind him. Tyler didn’t want to bother with him. Chris always verbally abused Tyler in public. He would spread rumors and call him names, but names don’t hurt Tyler a bit. He just simply ignores them.

Chris pinched the back of Tyler’s neck. “Owe!” whispered Tyler harshly.

“Tyler?” the teacher pointed out. She gave him ‘the evil eye.’

“Sorry, Mrs. Johnson,” replied Tyler. Chris nudged him on the shoulder again. Tyler turned around, annoyed. “What?”

“Nothing,” said Chris. He smiled.

Once Tyler turned back around, Chris pinched him again. “Stop!”

“Not the boss of me,” said Chris in a baby voice. He smirked and continued to pinch Tyler.

Tyler’s skin turned red. “Will you cut that out?” said Tyler in a harsh whisper after a moment.

“Tyler,” said Mrs. Johnson out loud, more strictly.

Tyler froze. He knew that twenty-two pairs of eyes were staring at him. “Yes, Mrs. Johnson?”

“Am I going to have to see you after class?” she asked. Tyler hung his head, trapped. He heard general giggles coming from his classmates. “Well?”

“Sorry, ma’am, I won’t do it again,” replied Tyler.

The class started talking again. This time, Mrs. Johnson was serious. “Stop talking, and get back to your work,” she said.

Tyler did not want to tell on Chris, or Chris would sometimes call him names frantically, or even start beating on Tyler.

The lunch bell rang. Luckily, they didn’t use the alarm. The lunch bell reminded Tyler about it.

Everyone immediately shot up from their desks and grabbed their lunches. Tyler was about to exit, but the teacher called his name. “Tyler, I need to see you at my desk, please.”

Tyler’s face flushed. He slowly walked towards her desk. He took a quick peek back and saw Chris, smiling at him.

“Why did you tell, huh?” asked Chris after school. He started shoving Tyler in the back.

“Because I did,” said Tyler.

Chris backed away. “Ooo, because you did, huh?” he said. “Well, I hear you were singing in the shower. I hear you sing… Brittany Spears.”

“No I didn’t,” said Tyler, getting annoyed.

“Oh, too late,” said Chris. “I E-mailed my pals telling them to let their pals know that you sang Brittany Spears in the boy’s locker room.”

How childish. Tyler didn’t know what to say. He just kept on walking. “Why did you do that?” asked Tyler. He hoped his voice didn’t sound as sad. What a silly thing to spread, he thought. But who would seriously believe he sang Brittany Spears?

“I was just telling them. What are you going to do about?” Chris snickered. He shoved Tyler hard on the shoulder, which nearly caused him to fall.

Tyler turned his head in another direction. “Just leave me alone,” he said in a tiring voice.

Chris backed away and put his hands up. “Fine. Have it your way.” He started walking in the other direction. Tyler was getting too annoyed. These silly things Chris spread are getting a little too old, thought Tyler. But they might still work. People will think I’m crazy; no wonder I don’t have any friends.

Friends…

Tyler thought a moment. Maybe I should get him back; maybe I should make him regret this. If I did what he did…? Tyler thought of what to do.

But he was gazing at the ground below him as he walked, and he didn’t notice that he nearly bumped into Ryan. Ryan is a tall eighth grader who likes to physically put beating on Tyler.

Tyler immediately looked up and saw Ryan turn around and look down at Tyler. “What brings you here?” he asked in a tough voice.

“I- I was just walking home,” stuttered Tyler. He gripped his backpack straps tightly.

Ryan took a big step forward, forcing Tyler to take a few steps back. “Wrong answer,” said Ryan. He gripped Tyler on the shoulder and squeezed it. Tyler closed his eyes and clenched his teeth together, feeling the pain slowly spread. He soon noticed that Ryan was shoving him to the building walls.

Ryan slammed Tyler onto the brick wall and pressed his hand on Tyler’s shoulder. “Stop!” lightly shouted Tyler.

Ryan smirked. “Why should I?” He pressed harder on Tyler’s shoulder. Ryan lifted up a fist and punched Tyler in the stomach without thinking.

Tyler dug down, gasping for air. Ryan stared down at him. “So, what’s the answer?” he asked. Tyler didn’t answer. He just kept trying to breath. “What’s the answer?” he asked more roughly. He started kicking Tyler on the back while on the floor. “What’s the answer, huh?”

Tyler tried to get up, but Ryan kept him down with his foot. Soon, when Tyler became too exhausted, Ryan slammed his foot on Tyler’s stomach. “Ahhh!” screeched Tyler as Ryan started walking away.

What a bad day, thought Tyler. After minutes which seemed like hours, he stood up. Tyler looked around. No one there. Everyone already left. Tyler started heading to the gates and walked home.

Tyler looked at the clock on top of the entrance to the classroom. It was 1:46. Tyler started getting worried. At least they tell you what time it’s going to happen, Tyler thought. Last year, the principle mentioned a fire drill, but she did not tell the time. Tyler kept his ears plugged the whole day, and it caused more pain to his ears. He could still remember how sweaty his hands got, and how good the pain relief felt after the drill. But this time, they’re doing it for people who enter the school grounds. Tyler was pretty sure that they wouldn’t have an alarm that time. That settled him down a bit.

Tyler dozed into his thoughts until he rested his head on his arms. He noticed that he was really tired, and his eyelids were heavy. His eyes became crispy, and everything looked blurry. He closed his eyes, and nearly fell asleep.

The loudspeaker turned on, which caused Tyler to jump from his desk. Two of his classmates stared and giggled at him, pointing. “Right now is the scheduled time drill. If you may please turn off all your lights and huddle underneath the window for twenty minutes, you may continue to work afterwards,” the speaker boomed. The class heard the click of the speaker turning off.

“Alright class,” said Mrs. Johnson. “Come over here and hide under my desk and Jared, may you please turn off the lights?”

Jared obediently got up and switched off the lights as the class went to the desk and hid under. One of the students got up and asked, “What’s this drill for?”

“It’s for crazy people who try and brake in the classroom,” replied another student.

The students struggled to fit under and near the desk. They kept on scooting, shoving and complaining. Tyler just leaned against the wall farther away from the desk. “Silence, students,” said Mrs. Johnson.

“Who’s at the window?” scarcely asked one of the students. The rest of the class immediately turned their heads toward the window and saw the ugly face of a teenager staring back, smiling. The class started complaining. Who was that?

The face disappeared. Then, on the top window, they all saw a knife tapping on it. “Ahhh,” faintly screamed the students. Tyler froze. At the window, he saw two teenagers. Then another three. Then ten more. Twenty more. They all started appearing in the school grounds, and soon circled the building.

Tyler’s eyes widened. He pointed at the bottom window. “Look!” he shouted. “Look at that! Who are they?”

The teacher became frightened. “Class, be quiet! They’ll hear us!” Tears started forming in her eyes as she watched the teenagers walked around the building, all holding weapons such as knifes, small axes, and bats.

The class panicked. Some of the girls were crying, and one of the students was whimpering. Tyler just froze, frightened and angry at the same time. The class wouldn’t be quiet when there are teenagers walking outside the building, holding weapons.

The class started screaming as one of the teens started banging on the door with and axe. The teacher was speechless. The class was frightened. Tyler slowly turned over and crawled to the desk at the back of the classroom without telling anyone. If he told, they all would come over there and reveal the spot. He managed to fit tightly under the desk. There was a phone there, but he could not get it, or they will know where he’s at.

The door was cracking open. “Ahhh!” shrieked the class. The face reappeared at the window with a hideous smile. His teeth were jagged and his eyes were somewhat bloodshot. The class could not bear to watch anymore.

Tyler became frightened. This is my only chance, he thought to himself. As the class watched the face in horror, Tyler reached for the phone and dialed 911. To his surprise, the phone line was dead. His heart sank like a stone in a pond. He knew that this was the end.

The door broke open. The class shrieked. “We’re all going to die!” repeatedly shrieked Chris. Tyler immediately dug under the desk once he saw the teens walk inside with knifes and axes.

Tyler hid under the desk, only to hear the blood-curdling screams of his classmates getting murdered. It was all too much for Tyler, so he covered the back of his head with his arms and shut his eyes tightly, trying to ignore the screams.

Tyler woke up exhausted. He noticed that the screams and the violence were over. He slowly got up and looked around in shock. There were dead bodies all over the classroom. Blood was splattered on the walls. One of the bodies was in a crawling position as if to reach the phone at the desk Tyler was hiding in.

Tyler burst out crying. He slowly made his way through the dead bodies of the class and into the outdoors. The whole area was empty. There were no cars and no people. Tyler sprinted across the street in panic to the gas station.

Once he burst inside, he saw the dead body of the cashier man, pierced, tortured and scarred. Tyler could not bear it any longer. He walked back out to see one of the teenagers looking straight at him in the distance. “Get him!” he shouted at the top of his lungs.

Tyler noticed that more teens were coming with bloody knives. Not only have they killed everyone in the school, but the whole city, too.

One approached him and jabbed the knife straight into Tyler’s chest, and Tyler fell forward onto the floor, lifeless.
